====== West Keram River ====== Timothy Usher, Santa Fe Institute ===== Situation ===== The West Keram River family, also known as Mongol-Langam, Koam or Ulmapo, consists of three languages spoken east of the Yuat river and west of the Keram river, both tributaries of the Sepik to the north, in the Angoram subdistrict of Papua New Guinea's East Sepik province (Laycock 1973: 36, q.v. p. 69, Barlow 2018: 19-20, 34-35.) Its nearest relatives are the Ambakich and Ap Ma languages immediately to the east. ===== Subclassification ===== The internal classification of West Keram River is as follows:\\ \\ West Keram River Ulwa Mwakai Pondi\\ \\ Barlow (2019a: 18-20) further proposes a Mwakai-Pondi subgroup. This may well be valid but if so is too shallow to be of much value as its own reconstruction. What is more striking is how lexically different these three languages are from one another even as their grammars are quite similar and they very obviously form a valid family. ===== Sources ===== Laycock (1971) comparative vocabularies of Mongol (Mwakai,) Langam (Pondi) and Yaul (Ulwa) villages (digitalized by Russell Barlow) Barlow (2018) grammar of Ulwa of Manu (Nɨmalmu) village including (pp. 485-522) 1,171 terms Barlow (2018) 483 comparative terms for Ulwa, Mwakai and Pondi Barlow (2019, 2020) grammar of Pondi of Langam (Amonan) village Barlow (2019, 2020) grammar of Mwakai of Mongol village Barlow (2019) 757 comparative terms for Ulwa of Manu (Nɨmalmu) village, Mwakai of Mongol village and Pondi of Langam (Amonan) village ===== Historical phonology ===== **[under construction]**\\ \\ Proto-West Keram River had 13 consonants and … vowels as follows: |< - 60px 60px 60px 60px >| | *m | *n | | | | *p | *t | *s | *k | | *mb | *nd | *ndz | *ŋg | | *w | *ɺ | *j | | |< - 60px 60px 60px >| | *i | *ɨ | *u | | [*e] | | [*o] | | | *a | | …\\ \\ …\\ \\ …\\ \\ Only a restricted subset of consonants occurs finally: |< - 60px 60px 60px >| | *m | *n | | | | *t | *s | | *w | *ɺ | *j | …\\ \\ Initial consonants correspond as follows: |< - 80px 80px 80px 80px >| | West Keram | Ulwa | Mwakai | Pondi | | *m- | m | m | m | | *n-/_i | n | ɲ | ɲ | | *p- | w | p | p | | *t- | t | ? | t | | *s- | t | s | s | | *s-/-i | s | s | s | | *k- | Ø | k | k | | *k-/_ɨ | k | k | k | | *nd- | nd | nd | nd | | *ndz-/_i | ndʒ | ndʒ | ndʒ | | *ŋg- | ŋg | ŋg | ŋg | | *w- | | | | | *ɺ- | n | r | l | | *j- | j | j | j | | *j-/_N NC | n | n | n | Medial consonants correspond as follows: |< - 80px 80px 80px 80px >| | West Keram | Ulwa | Mwakai | Pondi | | *-m- | m | m | m | | *-n- | n | n | n | | *-n-/_i | | | | | *-p- | p | p | p | | *-t- | t | r | t | | *-s- | t | s | s | | *-s-/_i | s | s | s | | *-k- | k | k | k | | *-mb- | mb | mb | mb | | *-nd- | nd | nd | nd | | *-ndz- | nd | ndʒ | ndʒ | | *-ndz-/_i | ndʒ | ndʒ | ndʒ | | *-ŋg- | ŋg | ŋg | ŋg | | *-w- | | | | | *-ɺ- | n | r | l | Final consonants correspond as follows: |< - 80px 80px 80px 80px >| | West Keram | Ulwa | Mwakai | Pondi | | *-m | m | m | m | | *-n | n | n | n | | *-t | t | r | ? | | *-s | t | s | s | | *-w | w | w | w | | *-ɺ | ɺ | r | l | | *-[ɺ] | Ø | r | l | | *-j | j | j | j (?) | Vowels correspond as follows: |< - 80px 80px 80px 80px >| | West Keram | Ulwa | Mwakai | Pondi | | *… | | | | These correspondences are exemplified as follows, with attestations drawn from Barlow (2018, 2019, 2020) and from Laycock (1971.) Mwakai does not distinguish dual number in pronouns: |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |West Keram|Ulwa |Ulwa |Mwakai |Mwakai |Pondi | | | |Manu |Yaul |Mongol |Kaimbal|Langam | |1 sg. |*ni |nɨ |nɨ |nə |ni ~ nə|ɲɨ | |2 sg. |*u |u |u |wu |u ~ wu |o | |3 sg. |*mɨ |mɨ |mɨ |mə |mə |mɨ | |1 pl. |*an |an |an |[ar] |kan |an | |1 pl. incl.|--- |un-an |un-a |--- |--- |--- | |2 pl. |*un |un |un |un ~ wun|un |wan | |3 pl. |*ndɨ |ndɨ |ndɨ |ndə |ndə |ndɨn | |1 dl. |*a[n]-ŋgVn|ŋgan |ŋgan |--- |--- |aɲ ~ an-in | |1 dl. incl.|--- |ŋgun-an |ŋgun-a|--- |--- |--- | |2 dl. |*u[n]-ŋgVn|ŋgun |ŋgun |--- |--- |waɲ ~ wan-in| |3 dl. |*min |min; nd-in|min |--- |--- |min | Ulwa's inclusive pronouns are transparent combinations of the second person plural /un/ or dual /ŋgun/ followed by first person plural /an/; there is no reason to think that proto-West Keram River drew this distinction. Ulwa and Pondi have different dual formants in the first and second persons, both of which have clear outcomparisons in Ramu River languages; the first is found also as a suffix upon East Keram River "two" and the second is reconstructed in West Keram as the dual of the reflexive and most likely of the third person as well. We consider Ulwa's to be original in this context because outcomparison to Banaro and other Ramu River languages show this to be the usual form for pronouns, with Pondi most likely extending the form /*-in/ by analogy.\\ \\ Free pronouns, especially third persons, are found also as prefixed verbal objects (Barlow 2018: 140-142, 2019a: 38-39, 52-53, 2019b.) They may also be prefixed to postpositions or the oblique suffix. Only third persons objects are given for Mwakai: |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |West Keram|Ulwa |Mwakai|Pondi | | | |Manu |Mongol|Langam | |1 sg. obj. |*ni- |nɨ- |--- |ɲɨ- | |2 sg. obj. |*u- |u- |--- |u- | |3 sg. obj. |*ma- |ma- |ma- |ma- | |1 pl. obj. |*an- |an- |--- |an- | |1 pl. incl. obj.|--- |un-an- |--- |--- | |2 pl. obj. |*un- |un- |--- |wan- | |3 pl. obj. |*ndɨ- |ndɨ- |ndə- |ndɨ- | |1 dl. obj. |*a-ŋgVn- |ŋgan- |--- |anin- ~ aɲ- | |1 dl. incl. obj.|--- |ŋgun-an-|--- |--- | |2 dl. obj. |*u-ŋgVn- |ŋgun- |--- |wanin- ~ waɲ-| |3 dl. obj. |*min- |min- |--- |min- | Possessive pronouns (Barlow 2018: 143-147, 2019a: 54-54, 2019b: 35) are derived from free pronouns with the suffixation of /*-ndzi/ "thing" as follows, with Mwakai forms elicited from Mongol village: |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |West Keram |Ulwa |Mwakai |Pondi | | | |Manu |Mongol |Langam | |1 sg. poss. |*ni-ndzi |nɨ-ndʒi |[(k)ani-ndʒi] |ɲi-ndʒin | |2 sg. poss. |*u-ndzi |u-ndʒi |wu-ndʒi |u-ndʒin | |3 sg. poss. |*ma-ndzi |ma-ndʒi |mɨ-ndʒi |ma-ndʒin | |1 pl. poss. |*an-ndzi |a-ndʒi |[ar-i-ndʒi\\ ~ ara-ndʒi]|a-ndʒin | |1 pl. incl. poss.|--- |un-a-ndʒi |--- |--- | |2 pl. poss. |*un-ndzi |u-ndʒi |wuni-ndʒi |wa-ndʒin | |3 pl. poss. |*ndɨ-ndzi |ndɨ-ndʒi |ndə-ndʒi |ndi-ndʒin | |1 dl. poss. |*a-ŋgVn-ndzi|ŋga-ndʒi |--- |an-i-ndʒin | |1 dl. incl. poss.|--- |ŋgun-a-ndʒi|--- |--- | |2 dl. poss. |*u-ŋgVn-ndzi|ŋgu-ndʒi- |--- |wan-i-ndʒin| |3 dl. poss. |*min-ndzi |mi-ndʒi |--- |mi-ndʒin | That /*-ndzi/ is the same root as "thing (sg.)" is made unambiguous by the fact that for plural possessed referents Pondi uses a suffix /-is/ derived from the suppletive /*-si/ "thing (pl.)". Superficially, Mwakai first person singular /(k)an-i-ndʒi/ and second person plural /wun-i-ndʒi/ look to derive from duals as seen in Pondi, suggesting that Mwakai once had a dual pronoun set with suffix /*-in/; however the semantic shifts would be unexpected and, as both base forms end in /n/ followed by /ndʒ/, the interpolation of /i/ might be explained phonologically.\\ \\ Focus pronouns (Barlow 2018: 156-163, 2019a: 54-55) were not elicited for Mwakai but can be reconstructed with a suffix /*-ambi/ based upon Ulwa and Pondi (where they are called intensive, but Ulwa's intensives take different suffixes) as follows: |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |West Keram |Ulwa |Pondi | | | |Manu |Langam | |1 sg. foc. |*ni-ambi |n-ambi |ɲ-am | |2 sg. foc. |*u-ambi |w-ambi |w-am | |3 sg. foc. |*m[a]-ambi |m-ambi |m-am | |1 pl. foc. |*an-ambi |an-ambi |an-am | |1 pl. incl. foc.|--- |un-an-ambi |--- | |2 pl. foc. |*un-ambi |un-ambi |wan-am | |3 pl. foc. |*nd[ɨ]-ambi |nd-ambi |nd-am | |1 dl. foc. |*a-ŋgVn-ambi|ŋgan-ambi |an-in-am | |1 dl. incl. foc.|--- |ŋgun-an-ambi|--- | |2 dl. foc. |*u-ŋgVn-ambi|ŋgun-ambi |wan-in-am| |3 dl. foc. |*min-ambi |min-ambi |min-am | ===== Nominal morphology ===== **[under construction]**\\ \\ …\\ ===== Verbal morphology ===== **[under construction]**\\ \\ s Keram River verbs take one of three suffixes marking aspect and mood which Barlow (2018…: , 2019a: 41-46, 2019b: 38-39) designates as imperfective, perfetive and irrealis or no suffix, indicating the imperative.\\ \\ … because we have only sparse data for Makai, Ulwa and Pondi are used to illustrate … |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px >| ||West Keram|Ulwa |Pondi |Ulwa |Pondi |Ulwa |Pondi | || |imperfective|imperfective|perfective|perfective|irrealis|irrealis| || |**** |**** |**** |**** |**** |**** | || | | | | | | | …\\ ===== Loans from neighboring languages ===== **[under construction]**\\ \\ …\\ \\ Immediately to the east of the West Keram River family is the more distantly related Ap Ma language. … (Barlow 2018: 22, 2019a: 16-17.) … Botin (Ap Ma) of Samban village drawn from Wade (1983) and Ap Ma of Yamen village from Barlow (2018, 2019): |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |Botin |Ap Ma |Ulwa |Mwakai |Pondi | | |Wade |Barlow | | | | |bank |jika |ika |ika |ika |-ikal | |hornbill |aɺimba |alɨmba |aɺmba | | | |fish sp. | |landʒin |ɺandʒin |arəndʒi| | |grub sp. |miɺik |mɨlɨk |mɨnkɨn | | | |full | |mawonap |monop | | | |grandmother |mom |mom | | |mom-wɨ| |statue | |molɨmbi |moɺombi |morambi| | |tilapia | |mbatmbat|mbatmbat | | | |rat sp. | |mbalundo|mbɺandu | | | |work |mbu-nduma |mbu-pai | |mbu | | |stomach |mbuop |mbuop |umbopa | | | |black/blue |mbund ~ pund|pɨndɨ |mbun | | | |wildfowl | |ɲokok |jokomakan|ɲoko | | |excrement |ɲu-nduma |ɲu | |ɲi | | |song |ko-nduma | |kaw | | | |song |ko-nduma | |kaw | | | |ladle |koŋgiɺe |koŋgle |woŋgɺin | | | |alone |ue | |we | | | |turtle | |we |waj | | | |meat |ɺam |lam |ɺam | | | |grandson |joɺum |jalum |jaɺum |jarum | | |sister's child|ŋgoɺo |ŋgolo | |ŋgaro | | … Waran (Banaro) drawn from … (Barlow 2018: 22): |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |Waran|Ulwa |Mwakai|Pondi| |mother |amaɾo| | |amalo| |knowledge|kaɾam|kaɺam| | | In one example, Waran has a final /m/ which in West Keram River indicates the singulative.
