====== South Awyu ====== Timothy Usher, Santa Fe Institute ===== Situation ===== The South Awyu family is comprised of two closely related languages, Bamgi River Awyu and Ia River Awyu, spoken by approximately 3,000 people (1975) living on either side of the Digul River near its delta in Indonesia's Papua province (Voorhoeve 1975: 375.) These are better known in the literature by their former river names, Sjiagha (Siagha, Syaxa) and Jenimu (Yenimu) respectively, following Drabbe (1950, 1954, 1959) (Lebold, Kriens and Susanto 2013: 24.) ===== Sources ===== Nevermann (1940: 195-196) 45 terms for Oser (Bamgi River) Drabbe (1950) grammar and (pp. 131-142) 408 comparative terms for Sjìagha (Ia River) and Jénimu (Bamgi River) Drabbe (1954: 231-255) 100 comparative terms for Sjìagha and Jénimu Drabbe (1959: 62-181) 431 comparative terms for Sjìagha and Jénimu Voorhoeve (1975: 375-376) brief general description of Syiagha Lebold, Kriens and de Vries (2010: 46-52) 97 comparative terms for South Awyu of Salamepe village (Bamgi River) Lebold, Kriens and Susanto (2013: 36-47) 239 comparative terms for South Awyu of Yeloba and Konebi (Jas) villages and (pp. 48-50) 60 comparative terms for Banamepe and Konebi (Homeme) (Bamgi River) Wester (2014) Awyu-Dumut comparative morphology including (pp. 195-210) 430 comparative terms for Shiaxa and Yenimu after Drabbe (1959: 162-181) ===== Historical phonology ===== Proto South Awyu had 14 or 17 consonants and 7 vowels as follows: |< - 60px 60px 60px 60px >| | *m | *n | | | | *p | *t | | *k | | *b | *d | | *g | | [*mb] | [*nd] | | [*ŋg] | | *ɸ | *s | | *x | | *w | *ɾ | *j | | |< - 60px 60px 60px >| | *i | | *u | | *e̝ | | *o̝ | | *ɛ | | *ɔ | | | *a | | Any consonant besides prenasalized stops can occur initially or medially. Prenasalized stops /*mb *nd *ŋg/ occur only medially. Their phonemic status is dependent upon whether they are to be analyzed as clusters or as unit phonemes. Their phonological behavior parallels that of final nasal archiphoneme /*N/ in combination with a following voiced stop /*b *d *g/, suggesting cluster /*NC/ to be the proper analysis. However, this would introduce root-internal consonant clusters, which otherwise occur only in compounds, while in most instances there is no evidence that words with prenasalized stops were ever compounds, and some may be loans from Yaqay. High vowels /*i *u/ do not occur initially. Excepting diphthongs, sequential vowels do not occur. Otherwise, any vowel can occur in any position.\\ \\ In addition to the seven cardinal vowels, five diphthongs are found: |< - 60px 60px 60px >| | | | *uⁱ | | *ɛⁱ | | *ɔⁱ | | | *aⁱ | | | | *aᵉ | | Stress appears to be contrastive, but is not consistently indicated in Drabbe's vocabularies.\\ \\ Only a restricted set of consonants occurs root-finally in nominals: |< - 60px 60px >| | *N | | | *t | | | | *x | | *ɾ | | Final nasal /*N/ is an archiphoneme resulting from the merger of final nasals /*m *n/. With a few exceptions, it is discernible only in Ia River when a root is followed by a suffix. Since verbs are mandatorily suffixed, this is the most common way for /*N/ to be identified. On verb stems, this set is futher reduced to two archiphonemes /*N *C/, the second of these reflecting Central Digul River final stops /*p *t *k/. Palatal non-stop [j] isn't recognized as a final consonant are because diphthongs /*ɛⁱ *ɔⁱ aⁱ/ are needed anyway to avoid consonant clusters, which don't otherwise occur, and because /*j/ would be the only final consonant that is not dropped in Bamgi River.\\ \\ Initial and medial consonants correspond as follows: |< - 80px 80px 80px >| | S. Awyu | Ia River | Bamgi R. | | *m | m | m | | *n | n | n | | *p | p | p | | *t | t | t | | *k | k | k | | *b | b | b | | *d | d | d | | *g | g | g | | *ɸ | ɸ | ɸ | | *s | s | s | | *x | x | x | | *mb | mb | b | | *nd | nd | d | | *ŋg | ŋg | g | | *w | w | w | | *ɾ | ɾ | ɾ | | *j | j | j | Final consonants correspond as follows: |< - 80px 80px 80px >| | S. Drabbe (1950: 94) asserts such a distinction between /e ɛ/ <é e> in both languages; however the correlation of these to /*e̝ *ɛ/ is statistical at best, and the arbitrary distinction <é e>, including for languages in which this contrast is definitely not phonemic, is a recurring weakness in Drabbe's documentations generally..\\ \\ These correspondences are exemplified as follows. Attestations below labeled Sjìagha and Jénimu are drawn from Drabbe (1950: 131-142, ibid., 1959: 162-181.) Salamepe village forms are drawn from Lebold, Kriens and de Vries (2010: 46-52) and Konebi and Yeloba from Lebold, Kriens and Susanto (2013: 36-47.)\\ \\ \\ … initial consonants ….\\ \\ Initial bilabial nasal /*m/ is retained as such in both languages: |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |South Awyu |Ia River |Bamgi River|Bamgi River|Bamgi River |Bamgi River| | | |Sjìagha |Jénimu |Konebi |Yeloba |Salamepe | | |***m-** |**m** |**m** |**m** |**m** |**m** | |star |*mi |mi |mi |mi |mi | | |drink/suck |*miN- |mi-nd |mi- |mi- |mi | | |morning |*mimiN |miˈmi |mimi | | | | |tail |*minu |miˈni | |ˈminu |ˈmunu |mun:u | |thigh/upper arm|*midi |midi |midi | | | | |swallow |*mikɔN- |miko-nd |miko- | | | | |forehead |*m[i/e̝]ka | |mika | | | | |tendon |*mɛ |me |me | | | | |come |*m[ɛ/ɔ]d[ɛ/ɔ]-|mode-d/moda-ɣ |mede- |mɛˈɖo |ˈmaɖo | | |weak |*ma |ma |ma | | | | |cooked |*ma |ma | | | | | |chest |*mata |maˈta |maˈta | | | | |tooth |*maga | |ˈmaga |ˈmaga |ˈmaga |maga | |behind |*mɔ | | |mo |mɔʔ | | |afraid |*mɔke̝ | | |ˈmoki |ˈmoki | | |stomach |*mɔdu |mudu |modu | | | | |hair/feather(s)|*mɔx |moɣo |mo |mo |mo |mɔ ~ mɔʔ | |cheek |*mɔxɔN |moɣo-mboge |moɣo-begi | | | | |goura pigeon |*mɔxɔ[x] |moˈɣoʃ |ˈmoɣow | | | | |earth/low/below|*m[ɔ]kaN |moˈka ~ moˈkan|moˈka |ˈmuka |ˈmaka ~ ˈmɑkɑ|muka | |not want |*mo̝N- |mo-nd |mu- | | | | |all |*mo̝nɔxɔ |ˈmonoɣo |ˈmunoɣo | | | | |elbow |*mo̝wɔ |mo |mo |muwo |muwo |mjo [sic] | |island |*mu |mu |mu | | | | |back |*mu |ˈmu-boge |ˈmu-begi | | | | |neck/nape |*mu(-tɔ) |mu |ˈmu(-to) | | | | Initial apical nasal /*n/ is significantly less common than initial /*m/, and is disproportionately represented by pronominal and imperative forms. There are three ways in which final /*N/ can be discerned in Ia River. First, it sporadically surfaces as [n ŋ] when a root is given in isolation: |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |South Awyu|Ia River |Bamgi River|Bamgi River|Bamgi River |Bamgi River| | | |Sjìagha |Jénimu |Konebi |Yeloba |Salamepe | | |***-N** |**N [n ŋ]** |**ø** |**ø** |**ø** |**ø** | |earth/low/below|*m[ɔ]kaN |moˈka ~ moˈkan|moˈka |ˈmuka |ˈmaka ~ ˈmɑkɑ|muka | |knee |*bɔkiN |bokin | | | | | |young man |*sib[a]N |ʃiˈboŋ |siˈba | | | | |blood |*gɔN |goŋ |go |go |go |go | |boil |*ɾuN |ruŋ | | | | | Final /*N/ is realized as Ia River [m] when a root is suffixed with /*bɔge/ "bone": |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |South Awyu |Ia River |Bamgi River|Bamgi River|Bamgi River|Bamgi River| | | |Sjìagha |Jénimu |Konebi |Yeloba |Salamepe | | |***-N/_b** |**N [m]** |**ø** |**ø** |**ø** |**ø** | |cheek |*mɔxɔN-bɔge̝|moɣo-mboge|moɣo-begi | | | | |shin |*biN-bɔge̝ |ˈbi-mboge |ˈbi-ˈbɛgi | | | | |sugarcane|*kuN(-bɔge) |ˈku-mboge |ku | | | | |rib(s) |*ɾiN-bɔge̝ |ˈri-mboge |ˈri-begi | | | | In a few examples, compounding shows /*N/ to have been present where it is not given in the isolated form: |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |South Awyu |Ia River |Bamgi River|Bamgi River|Bamgi River|Bamgi River| | | |Sjìagha |Jénimu |Konebi |Yeloba |Salamepe | | |***-N** |**N [ø]**|**ø** |**ø** |**ø** |**ø** | |tree/firewood |*jiN |ji |ji |ji |ji |ji | | |***-N/_r** |**N [n]**|**ø** |**ø** |**ø** |**ø** | |fire |*jiN-ɾɔ |ji-ndo |ji-do |iˈdo |ˈiːɖo | | |**** |***-N** |**N [ø]**|**ø** |**ø** |**ø** |**ø** | |morning |*miniN |miˈmi |mimi | | | | |sleep (n.) |*ko̝no̝N |kono |kunu |ˈkunu |ˈkunu | | | |***-N/_k** |**N [ŋ]**|**ø** |**ø** |**ø** |**ø** | |in the morning|*miniN ke̝ |miˈmi ŋke| | | | | |be sleepy |*ko̝no̝N ke̝-|kono ŋge-|kunu gi- |ˈkunu gi |ˈkunu gi | | The most common way for /*N/ to be identified is in verbs, which are mandatorily suffixed. 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |South Awyu |Ia River|Bamgi River|Bamgi River|Bamgi River| | | |Sjìagha |Jénimu |Konebi |Yeloba | |1 sg.|*no̝ |no |nu |nu |nu | |2 sg.|*go̝ |go |gu |gu |gu | |3 sg.|*ɛge̝, *ɛwe̝|ewe, ege|ewi, egi |ˈɛgi |ˈɛgɛ | |1 pl.|*no̝go̝ |noɣo |nugu |ˈnugu |ˈnugu | |2 pl.|*go̝go̝ |goɣo |gugu |gugu |gugu | |3 pl.|*jɔxɔ |joɣo |joɣo |ˈjogo [sic]|--- | Unfortunately, Lebold Kriens and de Vries (2010: 47) give no pronouns for Bamgi River of Salamepe. In the first and second person plurals, comparison to Central and West Awyu forms show Bamgi River's medial /g/ rather than Ia Riverˈs [ɣ] to be original. One explanation would be that Ia River regularized these by analogy to the third person plural. Alternately, the Ia River forms have been influenced by those of Edera Awyu immediately to the east, in which the lenition of medial /*g/ to [ɣ] is regular. Taken together with the third person singular possessive below, the juxtaposition of free forms /*ɛge *ɛwe/ suggests these to be suffixed versions of a base form /*ɛ/. The second of these is also found as /ewe-re/ "that" in Ia River.\\ \\ Possessive forms are reconstructed as follows: |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |South Awyu|Ia River|Bamgi River| | | |Sjìagha |Jénimu | |1 sg. poss.|*na |na |na | |2 sg. poss.|*ga |ga |ga | |3 sg. poss.|*wa |wa |wa | |1 pl. poss.|*n[i]ga |ˈnaɣa |ˈniga | |2 pl. poss.|*g[i]ga |ˈgaɣa |ˈgiga | |3 pl. poss.|*jaxa |ˈjaɣa |ˈjaɣa | It's not clear why Ia River and Bamgi River vowels in the first and second person plural forms should differ. ===== Counting system ===== Numbers are reconstructed as follows, with forms drawn from Drabbe (1950: 104-105) and Lebold, Kriens and Susanto (2013: 43): |< - 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px 100px >| | |South Awyu |Ia River |Bamgi River |Bamgi River |Bamgi River | | | |Sjìagha |Jénimu |Konebi |Yeloba | |1 |*e̝sij[ɔ] |eˈʃa |iˈʃo |iʃijo |[iːska] | |2 |*ɔko̝ma |oˈkomo |okum |ˈokuma |ˈokuma | |3 |*ɔko̝ma e̝sij[ɔ]|okom-eˈʃa |okum-iˈʃo |ˈokum-ʃijo |okum-[ˈiska] | |4 |*ɔko̝ma ɔko̝ma |okom-oˈkomo |okum-okum |ˈokum xam-\\ okuma |ˈokumɑ xɑm\\ okumɑ| |5 |*be̝dɔ-[x]aɸ[e̝]|bed-afi-bumo|bed-afi-koˈmɛ|ˈbida-ɣaɸe\\ ˈburoma|bido-aˈɸe\\ buroma| |10|*sɛ |sɛ |sɛ |--- |--- | Unfortunately, Lebold Kriens and de Vries (2010: 50) give no numbers for Bamgi River of Salamepe. Yeloba /iska/ “one” is a loan from Marind /*ijakod/ (e.g. Mbian River /iska/, q.v. Drabbe 1954: 142,) perhaps via Edera Awyu. According to Drabbe, /*be̝dɔ-[x]aɸ[e̝]/ in the term for "five" means "one hand." ===== Verbal morphology ===== **[under construction]**\\ \\ Drabbe (1950: 108-129) …\\ \\ \\
