Kais, also known as Kampong Baru, is spoken by 600 people (2004) living in a single village, Kais or Kampong Baru, along the Kais river in the southern portion of the Bird's Head peninsula in Indonesia's West Papua province (Voorhoeve 1975: 34, Berry and Berry 1987: 92, 98, de Vries 2004: 129.) The term Kais /kais-o/ means “person.”
